Outdoor kitchen build area with grill, worktop, storage and seating

DIY build step 8

Outdoor Kitchen Lighting and Seating

Finish the kitchen by making it safe to cook in and comfortable to sit around. Lighting and seating turn the build from a grill station into a usable outdoor room.

Task light

Task light

Light the grill, prep surface and sink clearly so cooking is safe after dark.

Ambient light

Ambient light

Use warm lower-level light around dining and seating so the space feels relaxed.

Comfort

Comfort

Keep seats close enough for conversation but out of smoke, heat and the main carrying route.

Cooking

Light the cooking and prep zones first

A single patio floodlight usually creates glare and shadows. Put focused light over the grill, worktop and sink so you can see colour, doneness, knives and hot pans clearly.

Aim lights at surfaces, not into faces.

Avoid placing the cook in their own shadow.

Use separate switching for task and mood lighting.

Choose fittings with suitable IP ratings for the exposure.

Mood

Add ambient light after the task layer works

Warm wall lights, pergola downlights, festoons and low garden lighting make the seating area inviting. Keep this layer softer than the cooking layer so the patio does not feel like a work site.

Use warm colour temperatures for seating areas.

Keep bright lights away from eye level.

Use dimmers or separate circuits where practical.

Let planting and walls reflect light gently.

Social layout

Place seating where people can talk without blocking the cook

The best seating layout lets guests face the cooking area without standing in the cook’s working space. Keep a clear route from the house and leave enough room to pull chairs back from the table.

Avoid placing chairs directly in smoke paths.

Keep a clear carrying route for hot food.

Leave space around dining chairs, not just the table footprint.

Use stools or a bar ledge only where circulation remains comfortable.

Comfort

Budget for shade, covers and storage

Seating is only useful if it is comfortable in real weather. Think about shade, wind, cushions, furniture covers, storage and how the area drains after rain.

Choose weather-resistant furniture frames.

Store cushions somewhere dry.

Avoid fabric directly beside greasy cooking zones.

Plan shade without trapping smoke over the grill.
